Are solar panels suitable for my home?

Most homes can have a solar and/or battery installation. However, the system’s efficiency can be impacted by a few things; firstly, the more southerly facing the roof, the better and ideally, it wants to have a pitch of between 30° and 40°. Generally speaking, installing less than four panels on a domestic property is not cost-effective. Keep reading our FAQ on how much space you’ll need for more information. Or give us a call on 0208 064 1974.

Ideally, the roof space on which the panels are being installed should be clear from shade. However, there are clever things we can do to mitigate the impact of shading, such as optimisers, for example, Tigo’s or the Solaredge system. We will also need to be able to install scaffolding to allow access to where the panels are going to be installed.

Next, you’ll need to decide if solar panels make financial sense generally speaking, the higher your energy usage, the faster your return on investment will be, and of course, from the day we commission your system, you will start saving the money you would have otherwise spent on bills, which will go towards paying back the cost of your solar system.

Where are you currently installing?

Does it matter which direction my solar panels face?

Solar panels don’t necessarily need to face true south for optimal efficiency; however, north-facing

roofs are not as efficient, and Southeast and Southwest orientations are still effective. East and West-facing roofs see a modest efficiency drop of about 15%, but technological advances can help mitigate the impact of a non-South-facing roof.

Do solar panels require constant sunshine?

While solar panels operate even in overcast conditions and during winter, their peak efficiency is

achieved at times of direct sunlight. They won’t produce energy at night, but pairing them with a

battery allows you to store energy not used during the day for you to be used when you need it.

How long will it take to install solar?

Installing a solar panel system typically takes just a couple of days. However, we generally have the

scaffolding up for two weeks on either side of the fit, just in case of weather, etc.

What is battery storage?

A battery helps you store unused solar-generated electricity instead of sending it back to the grid or using a time-of-day tariff to top up. This lets you tap into it when there is no sunlight or your property’s electrical demand is greater than the panels can produce. While the upfront cost of a system with a battery is more than a system without, it promotes self-sufficiency and can save you from costly grid electricity in the future. This ensures as much of your energy consumption as possible is entirely eco-friendly and produced at home; it also helps to maximise your return on investment as you minimise what you are exporting.

Should I get battery storage installed too?

Your energy generation and consumption patterns influence this decision; however, if your peak energy usage is in the evenings, a battery would be beneficial because you might otherwise be exporting your solar generation during daylight hours. A battery allows you to store this energy for evening use. Everyone’s situation is unique, and there are many factors to consider; thankfully, our solar experts guide you through decision-making. Another benefit of installing a battery with your solar system is that it is currently Zero VAT.

How much space do I need?

On your roof: The number of panels for your roof hinges on its size and energy consumption; each panel measures approximately 1.7m x 1.1m, requiring a 40cm buffer from the roof and its edge, valleys and ridge. Typically, homes feature 5+ panels, each being approximately .415kW, so that a 5-panel system would be rated at 1.66kW; more panels equate to increased electricity generation. A more extensive panel array might be ideal if your energy demands are substantial. We are here to explore and explain every possibility to you.

Inside your home: We will need to find a home for the inverter, battery, and some other smaller bits of kit. Generally speaking, the inverter is approximately the size of a small carry-on suitcase, and the batteries vary by their capacity; however, a standard 5kWh battery, is ideal for most homes and would measure approximately 360mm (W) x 740mm (H) x 150mm (D). Depending on the setup and equipment, it can be mounted in a loft, garage, or outside!

Does it come with a warranty?

All our kit and work comes with a warranty backed up by the consumer code HIES and manufacturer warranties. Our comprehensive proposal
